Patchwork Textile – Central Asian Dowry Art
This authentic and stunning bed spread / wall hanging from 20th Century patchwork textile was originally crafted as part of a bridal dowry in the Amu Darya region of Central Asia. It is a beautifull patchwork of velvet, silk ikat, printed cotton and other fabrics cut into geeometric shapes and stitched together. It was made by a young woman born and raised in Central Asia, following a centuries-old tradition passed down through generations.

Traditionally, woman crafted patchwork textiles like this one from worn family garments, ikat textiles to preserve memoriesof kin and moments past.
These patchworks were not only decorative: They also helped insulate homes during winter. They stand as remarkable exampels of resourcefulness and memory turning leftover cloth and ikat into functional art.
We carefully sourced this piece in Türkiye from a warm and welcoming Central Asian family who immigrated to Türkiye decades ago, preserving their cultural textile heritage.

It is in very good condition, because it was used as a wall hanging.
Vintage Central Asian patchwork textiles are deeply symbolic. Traditionally prepared for weddings, they were presented to the groom’s family as a sign of unity between two families.
Symbolism & Meaning
Central Asian Patchwork Textiles are adorned with meaningful motifs such as:
* Geometric Shapes, Squares, etc
These motifs traditionally represent luck, protection, fertility, long life, happiness, and strength.
Craftsmanship
The base fabric is typically cotton, velvet, satin, or occasionally silk, embroidered with silk or cotton threads.
The design is first hand-drawn onto the fabric, then carefully stitched using traditional techniques such as:
* Chain stitch
* Satin stitch
* Buttonhole stitch
