This Suzani Textile was made for dowry in Amu Derya by Central Asian girl who was born and lived in Uzbekistan. We bought it in Cappadocia, Türkiye from a very friendly Uzbek family who immigrated to Türkiye about 30-40 years ago. There are some letters written in Cyrillic ? alphabet and designs drawn by pen and not embroidered! These not embroidered pen marks can be seen at the last two pictures of the Suzani. This Suzani is perfect for both contemporary and traditional settings. This intricate and lovingly-made Suzani can be used in so many ways to add texture, romance and delight to any room. All our Suzani Textiles are ''One of a Kind''. It is a piece of an '' Embroidered Art ''.
Suzani is a type of embroidered and decorative tribal textile made by Central Asian ladies especially brides as a part of their dowry, and were presented to the groom on the wedding day who are living in Central Asia or Central Asian refugees in Türkiye who immigrated from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, etc.
Suzanis represent the binding together of two families and they are adorned with symbols of luck, health, happiness, long life and fertility.
Suzani means needlepoint in Farsi.
The background fabric of Suzani textiles is usually either cotton, velvet, satin and sometimes silk fabric base, which is embroidered in silk or cotton thread. The design / pattern is first drawn onto the coton / velvet / satin / silk textile before being embroidered on narrow portable handmade tribal looms. Chain, satin, and buttonhole stitches are the primary stitches which are used. Suzani textiles are often made in two or more panels / pieces, because Suzanis were made at different places during trips of tribes and then stitched together to make a bedspread, table cover, wall hanging, etc.
Minor tears or marks can sometimes be present which is normal for these vintage older Suzanies and some Suzanies have old Soviet fabric backing, too. All of our Suzanis are original pieces and most are older pieces ranging from approximately 30 to 80 years. Often pen is used as a marker for layout before embroidery starts and occasionally one can see some of the original pen outline which is normal for an original Suzani.
Most popular designs which are used on Suzani textiles are medallion, sun, moon, flowers such as tulips, carnations, camomile, daisy, leaves and wines, fruits such as pomegranates and animal figures such as birds, fishes, deers. It is a believe that these designs / motives imbue the Suzani textiles and Suzani cushions / pillow covers with spiritual powers which are offering protection and strength to their owners. This beautiful Suzani Textile will make a wonderful decoration to your space and will bring positive energy, too.
This beautiful special Suzani can be used as a bed spread / bed sheet, table cover, sofa cover, wall hanging, etc.
